HOLES is one of those rare children’s books that is just as compelling to read as a child as it is as an adult. One of my favourites growing up, it’s a story that was just as relevant in 1998 as it is right now. As such, I thought a fun personal project would be to design a cover for an upcoming 30th Anniversary edition.
I wanted to go as minimal as possible - a stark, barren cover reflecting the stark, barren desert that is its setting. There’s a central concept here that’s punchy enough not to be burdened with any other unnecessary details. For an anniversary edition, it needed a cover that appealed across all ages - attracting readers both old and new, respecting their intelligence and tastes.
